The English-language news options for Barcelona are thinner than Madrid's, not richer. Catalan News (Generalitat-funded, high-signal, criminally under-promoted), the Barcelona section of The Local Spain, an Olive Press regional bleed, and that's about it for native English. Everything else means reading La Vanguardia, El Periódico, ARA or El Punt Avui in Spanish or Catalan, and Google Translate still doesn't really do Catalan past simple sentences.
This matters because Barcelona's most-read stories are not Madrid stories. CatSalut healthcare runs differently from SERMAS. The TMB metro and bus network has its own incident page. Generalitat language and education policy is its own continuous story. Mossos d'Esquadra (Catalan police) operates separately from the Guardia Civil. The political beat — ERC, Junts, the post-procés aftermath — is not what El País English leads with in the morning.
Specific recurring gap: the regional llei amendments that affect foreign residents — rental caps, the housing índice, the empadronamiento moratoriums on tourist-flat addresses — appear in the Generalitat's Catalan-language press feed first and propagate to English-language coverage days later, if at all. By then your landlord already adjusted.
An app for Barcelona has to handle two languages of source, not one. Localista translates both Catalan and Spanish municipal feeds, keeps the byline structure intact (so you know Catalan News said it, not a foreign wire-service rewrite), and surfaces TMB incidents at the same priority as El País politics — because if you're on Line 1 and it's stopped, that's the news of the morning.
I'm Juan Gabriel, American autónomo in Málaga since 2023. I built Localista because every other 'Spain news in English' app meant Madrid politics with a side of Latin America, while my actual life — schools, healthcare, the cita previa wait at my district office — was buried in Spanish I read at half speed. So I built the city-specific, daily-translated app I wanted my first year here.
GoThere walks you through Spain visas, document checklists and cost calculators. Same team, separate app.
